How Do I Tell If Backup/Restore Worked?

How can I tell if mfsbackup actually worked correctly?

I've replaced the hard drive in my Series 2 but the replacement doesn't work either, even though I'm pretty convinced the drive itself is good. My hunch is that the TiVo system software that I backed up off the failing drive is bad. After all, if TiVo couldn't read it, how can MFS Tools read it?

Is there some way to tell if the software rescued from the failing drive is actually good, and not hopelessly corrupted?

In other words, how can I distinguish between bad software and a bad hard drive (or some other failure)?

Did you get it going ? Fixed ? I don't know how come no one responded .

Yes, I got it going again, but not through the backup. I had to use Instant Cake and basically start over.

Bummer. I would have liked to use the backup I made, but since that didn't work I can only assume that the backup was bad. Unfortunately, there's no way to know, and now it doesn't matter.
