I had to use advanced mode too
I had to use advanced mode too for upgradming my Hughes SD-DVR40 to a 200 gig Maxtor drive. My problem was that the computer was able to boot from cdrom, but not as the primary slave on the cable. It was kind of weird, I moved it to primary master and set the jumper accordingly and it booted fine. It was probably a problem with the computer I was using, an older Dell *ew* P4 desktop that I normally use as a file server.
For me the advanced mode worked fine, granted the hard drive was where it was supposed to be, just a slight difference with the cdrom.

Tried using the advanced mode because of the cables and hardware configuration that are available to me want me to put my new drive on primary master and the CD on secondary master.
I got the same "edit_bootparms" failed message and the drive hangs the TiVo on the "Welcome. Starting Up..." screen.
I guess I'm going to have to make the "right" way to work...

There is nothing wrong with instantcake, the error message indicates bad sectors on the hard drive in the boot loader. If it is a new drive return it, If it is an old drive, replace it
