Instantcake 6.4a for HR10-250 - prevents PPP "dial in" from working?
One of the hard drives in a pair died in one of my HR10-250 HD DirecTivos. I could have copied the OEM 250gb drive again to a new drive, but that would put me back on 3.15f so I purchased the Instantcake 6.4a image. Everything went fine on the restore and the drive is good (but why does cake require the CD to be the slave drive on the primary?). Anyway, I installed the caked drive and everything was fine until it was time to "phone in" the first time. I have a VoIP line so the modem does not work, but I use PPP via a computer and ,#211 as the dial prefix. Works fine on all my Tivos. Does not work on the caked 6.4a image. I spend about all day trying to get it to work via the internal model, external modem, and PPP - no go. In the logs and in hypertermal I can see the caked box sends extra characters that I don't get with the other Tivos. After wasting ALL DAY I gave up and used the live tools copy the OEM drive to the new drive. Came right up and phones in via PPP just fine - so it was not the box or the cable or the PC or the new drive.
Fast forward a month or so. I got a used HR10-250 to replace a SD Tivo. The drive was bad, so I popped in a new drive and caked it using the 6.4a image I purchased before. Same exact thing - does not work over PPP because of the extra characters.
I know it is not a 6.4a problem (as delivered from D*) since I have another HR10 that has 6.4a on it that was installed as part of the normal upgrade from 3.15f ->6.0->6.1a .
So I think there is (or was at the time I purcase) a bug in the cake image that screws up PPP dial ins. I searched here and saw some reports of phone in problems as well, so it would SEEM even if I took my box to a place with a real phone line it might not work.
I could take the drive out of my working 6.4a box, copy the OS onto the new drive, put it in the new to me box, clear all, and see if PPPing works - I bet it would. I could take the OEM drive from one of the other HR10s and copy the OS, clear all, and I bet that would work too.
What I want to work is for the image I purchased to be able to PPP in as it should. The upgrade from 3.1.5f seems to be out of the data stream as I have been unable to get the software upgrade in weeks of trying. So if I have to go to 3.15 on this new box it will probably be stuck there.
At one time, I did purchase HDNet and used it for a while, but ended up not using it very much so did not load it or use the disc on any of these installs. I should not HAVE to use it to get the cake image to work with PPP - right?
I can post logs from the "modem" logs or captures from hypterterminal of a working and caked boxes so you can see the differences, if that will help.
Thanks for any and all help.

I was not able to find a 6.4a image for my HR10-250, but I was able to find a non-cake 6.3e image. I restored that using live tools boot CD and installed the drive back in the HR10 (same drive, same Tivo). The "dial" in via PPP works like a charm - no problems.
So there is a bug in instantcake 6.4a - or at least the version I downloaded a couple of months back - that prevents PPP remoting in from working - I guess.
Can someone else confirm this and can DVRupgrade fit it?
Oh, can I have my $19.99 back - and all the time I wasted trying to make my caked Tivo PPP in
?
Thanks,
Dennis
